QuickCheck: Is a viral poster about civil servants’ pay increments legitimate?

EVERYONE likes to have more money, so everyone likes to hear that they are getting a bump up in salary. Recently a poster has been circulating online showing the increment rate for civil servants this year.

Is this true? Is the viral poster actually legitimate?

Verdict:

FALSE

In a post on its social media accounts, the Public Service Department (JPA) has deemed the poster as fake news.

The department then went on to urge the public not to share information that they were uncertain of.

This isn't the first time that hoaxers have targeted JPA with false announcements, particularly concerning money.

Last month, another poster was being circulated on social media announcing a RM700 special financial aid package.

In that case, the hoaxers had doctored a legitimate infographic from the department's corporate communication unit.

On a lighter note, a trick pdf was widely shared on the social messaging app WhatsApp to announce a pay rise for civil servants.

The message used the department's director-general's letterhead to give it some weight.

However, when recipients clicked on it to read what was on the pdf, they instead got a rude message rather than an actual pay raise.

"The 2024 Civil Servant salary increase memo that uses the letterhead of the department's deputy DG (Development) is fake," said the PSD in a statement on its official Facebook page.

"It's OK to joke but there are limits," it went on to say while urging the public to use social media wisely.
