GIVEN Malaysia's past history with tsunamis since December 2004, any rumour of a tsunami or tsunami would go viral rapidly - and this is especially so when it is said that the Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) is issuing an alert.
This is logically even so when what is claimed that the alert is in fact a drill; it has been claimed that a tsunami alert that will be issued soon in Sarawak is in fact such a test.
Is this true?
VERDICT:
TRUE
MetMalaysia, through its official social network channels, announced that it would conduct a test of its Malaysian Tsunami Early Warning System.
The test will be conducted at the Fisheries Development Authority of Malaysia (LKIM) complex in Mukah, Sarawak.
According to the post, the test will be conducted from 10am to noon on Thursday, May 2.
MetMalaysia advises residents in the area not to panic, as the siren that would be heard during the period is just a test of the early warning system.
It also said that it would notify the public of any changes.
