QuickCheck: Was an elderly man hurt by a falling tree in Penang?


WITH the storms that have been hitting Peninsula Malaysia over the last few days, many trees have become uprooted; in some cases, these uprooted trees have injured people and damaged property as they fell.

It was claimed recently that a senior citizen was injured at the Penang Botanical Gardens when a branch from a collapsing tree fell on him. Is this true?

VERDICT:

TRUE

An 80-year-old man was injured after a tree fell on him at the Penang Botanic Gardens while he was walking across the bridge about 9:15am on Wednesday (May 8).

Northeast district Civil Defence Force officer Kapt (PA) Muhammad Aizat Abd Ghani said that a call about the incident had been received shortly before 9.20am.

In the incident, the man had seen the tree falling towards him and had tried to escape but tripped and fell onto the road and at this point, a branch from the tree hit him.

Despite the injuries to his face and various parts of his body, the man was rescued and is reported to be in stable condition after being rushed to the hospital for further treatment.
