QuickCheck: Was one tonne of scrap removed from a hoarder's home in Penang?

WE HAVE all found ourselves in situations where we cannot throw out things that seem useless to others because we think they could be helpful one day.

It was said that a homeowner in Penang hoarded so much stuff that the local authority had to step in and clear their one-tonne of scrap.

Did this happen?

Verdict:

TRUE

According to a Pulau Pinang City Council post on Facebook, a home in the southwest district of the island was found inundated with scraps.

"Based on the Local Government Act 1976 under Section 82, the Penang City Council issued a Notice Requiring Nuisance Removal to the premises owner on May 14 2024," it said, adding that the premises owner did not heed their warning.

On May 28, the city council's Enforcement Department led a joint operation with the South West District Health Office, the Royal Malaysian Police and internal departments to clear the home of scrap.

"A police report was made regarding this matter, and the scraps were confiscated.

"One truck was used, and an estimated one tonne of scrap was successfully collected.

"The owner of the premises will be charged according to the set rate for works to remove the nuisance," it said.

The city council said that the police managed to keep the premises owner, who tried to aggressively prevent city council officers from carrying out their work, under control.

"At the same time, officials from the Southwest District Health Office discovered possible mosquito breeding sites on the premises," it said.

The city council is also considering taking action against the owner for letting his premises become a breeding ground for mosquitoes.

This Integrated Operation ends at 10.50 am after the grounds of the premises have been cleaned.
