QuickCheck: Was a cat thrown into a Penang river recently?


INCIDENTS of animal cruelty are shocking.

Because of this, such news tends to go viral, especially if it is caught on video.

Recently, a video of several individuals retrieving a gunny sack from the river and finding a dead cat inside went viral, along with the claim that it happened in Penang.

Is this true?

This was confirmed by Timur Laut OCPD Asst Comm Razlam Ab Hamid, who said that the incident happened at Jalan Kota Giam, Jelutong.

He said that an investigation paper has been opened into the incident.

"Further investigations are underway, including tracking the suspect involved, and the police have opened an investigation paper under the Animal Cruelty Act 2015," he said when Bernama contacted him on Saturday (June 1).

The cat is believed to have been thrown into the river by a suspect.

Meanwhile, Malaysian Animal Association president Arie Dwi Andika said a witness saw a man throwing a gunny sack stuffed with a cat into a river at about 8.30am on Friday (May 31).

He added that the witness tried to save the cat but found that it had died.

"Following that, the witness, a representative of our association in Penang, lodged a police report, and we urged the authorities to conduct a detailed investigation," he said.
