QuickCheck: Did a motorcycle burst into flames at a Johor border checkpoint recently?

WHEN heading from point A to point B, it is often taken for granted that the vehicles on the road are generally safe from any major malfunction.

As such, it is always dramatic when a vehicle bursts into flames for all to see - so much so that any video of such an occurrence is likely to go viral.

Not too long ago, a video of a motorcycle on fire went viral along with the claim that the incident happened at the Bangunan Sultan Iskandar border checkpoint in Johor Baru.

Is this true?

VERDICT:

TRUE

Johor Baru South OCPD Asst Comm Raub Selamat confirmed this, saying that the incident occurred at the motorcycle lane outbound of the Malaysia-Singapore customs, immigration and quarantine complex at around 12.54pm last Sunday (June 23)

“Two traffic policemen patrolling the area rushed to the scene after noticing the thick smoke.

The flames were completely put out by the Fire and Rescue Department at around 1.45pm. No injuries were reported,” he said in a statement on Wednesday (June 26)

ACP Raub issued the statement after a video clip of the fire made rounds on Facebook.

In the comment section of the video, a woman, who said she and her husband were the owners of the motorcycle, said they were unharmed during the incident.

On the cause of the fire, he said it is believed to be linked to an issue with the motorcycle’s electronic control unit.
