QuickCheck: Did a Singaporean couple escape unharmed after their car burst into flames at Johor's BSI?


VIDEOS of a vehicle in flames have gone viral on social media, with comments claiming that the incident happened at the Customs, Immigration and Quarantine Complex (CIQ) at Johor Baru's Bangunan Sultan Iskandar (BSI).

It was also said that the car's occupants, a Singaporean couple, managed to escape unharmed in the incident.

Is it true that a Singaporean couple escaped unharmed after their car burst into flames at the BSI CIQ?

Johor Baru South OCPD Asst Comm Raub Selamat confirmed the incident, saying that it happened at 8.15pm on Monday (July 8) at the vehicle entrance heading towards Singapore.

“The fire was extinguished at 8.35pm with the cooperation of the police, auxiliary police, Rela, and the Immigration Department, using fire extinguishers to control the fire from spreading.

“A Fire and Rescue Department team arrived at the scene at 8.43pm, however, the fire had already been put out,” he said in a statement here Tuesday (July 9).

ACP Raub added that the couple who owned the vehicle, aged 31 and 32 years old, were unhurt, and there were no casualties in the incident.

The Fire and Rescue Department is investigating the case to determine the cause of the fire, he added.

Meanwhile, Larkin Fire and Rescue Department operations commander Saiful Nizam Mohamad said that the fire had destroyed about 60% of the Singapore-registered vehicle.

“The flames were put out by the BSI agencies using a fire hydrant and three fire extinguishers; the department has only come to monitor the situation to ensure that it is under control,” he said.

Earlier, several videos of the incident were posted on Facebook, showing a car engulfed in flame.
