QuickCheck: Has Air Selangor been issuing water supply cut-off labels with QR codes?

SEEING new labels or tags on one's property can be a cause for concern, especially when such labels come bearing the logo of an official service provider with a notice that the water supply to the property is to be cut off.

Recently, photos of red labels went viral on social media along with the claim that utility provider Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Air Selangor) uses these to inform consumers that their water supply is to be cut off soon. Is this true?

VERDICT:

TRUE

Air Selangor has confirmed that the labels are used by the company in a Facebook post on Friday (July 12), saying that these are used in its dealings with customers who have outstanding bills.

“For customers who do not have outstanding bills but still receive the label, please contact us at 15300 or submit an inquiry through the Help Centre available at www.airselangor.com and the Air Selangor app,” it said in the post.

Earlier, social media users reported that their water supply had been suddenly cut off and found a red label when they went to check.

These social media users said that scanning the QR code on the label led them to a website that initially appeared to be the official Air Selangor site but later seemed otherwise.
