QuickCheck: Did a man cause a multi-vehicle crash in Penang as seen in a viral video?


ROAD accidents are generally shocking events, and this is especially so when multiple vehicles are involved in the pile-up.

As such, any footage of such an accident tends to go viral quickly along with rumours and claims about its cause.

Recently, a video of an accident involving several vehicles went viral online along with the claim that it happened in Batu Ferringhi, Penang when a man tried to evade the police.

Is this true?

VERDICT:

TRUE

George Town OCPD Asst Comm Razlam Ab Hamid confirmed this, saying that a man was eventually arrested on Saturday (July 20) in front of a restaurant located along Jalan Batu Ferringhi towards Teluk Bahang in connection with the pile-up.

In a statement on Sunday (July 21), ACP Razlam then thanked the public for their part in helping to stop the suspect.

He said that when arrested, substances suspected to be cannabis and methamphetamine were found in the man's sling bag.

ACP Razlam then added a further check found that the man has a criminal record for theft with two prior arrests for drug-related offences.

He said that the suspect tested positive for methamphetamine and amphetamine and said that the case is being investigated under Section 12 (3), Section 6 and Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

ACP Razlam then added that the suspect is being investigated under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 as well as Section 186 and Section 427 of the Penal Code

In the 23-second viral video, the suspect can be seen refusing to stop despite attempts from the police shortly before an accident involving several vehicles.
