EVER wondered if stealing a washing machine could make you an internet star overnight?

One man discovered this when he was filmed during his daring heist, and the video spread like wildfire online.

But with his fame sealed in sudsy infamy, did the incident really happen?

Verdict:

TRUE

Police have confirmed they received a report regarding the incident from a 33-year-old local woman, the owner of an electrical goods business, Seri Alam OCPD Supt Mohd Sohaimi Ishak said in a statement on Sunday (Aug 4).

He added that the incident occurred at about 1.30pm on Saturday (Aug 3) in the Taman Desa Cemerlang area of Ulu Tiram, Johor.

"Due to swift police action, a 23-year-old local man was apprehended on the same day," he said, adding that a police report was made by a local man, and both a car and the washing machine were seized.

"A remand application for the suspect was granted from Sunday to Wednesday (Aug 4 to 7)," he said.

Checks on the suspect found a history of criminal and drug offences, Supt Sohaimi added.

The investigation is being conducted under Section 379 of the Penal Code for theft, which carries a penalty of up to seven years imprisonment, a fine, or both upon conviction.

"The public is reminded not to engage in actions that violate the law.

"Any information on criminal activities can be reported to the Seri Alam District Police hotline at 07-387 1422," Supt Sohaimi added.
