QuickCheck: Did a man high on drugs cause a six-vehicle crash in Sabah?


DRIVING under the influence of drugs or alcohol is generally regarded as something highly dangerous, and it can often lead to very dramatic accidents should people try to do something like this.

It was recently said that a man driving under the influence of drugs caused a six-vehicle crash in Tawau, Sabah. Is this true?

VERDICT:

TRUE

This was confirmed by Tawau police chief Asst Comm Jasmin Hussin, who said that a call was received regarding the incident at about 5.15pm on Monday (Aug 12) involving an accident at Mile 3 Jalan Apas in the district on Sabah's east coast.

He said the initial probe found that a 32-year-old man was recklessly driving into Bandar Tawau before he rammed into three parked vehicles and three moving ones, including a motorcycle.

ACP Jasmin said that the 26-year-old motorcyclist was the only person who got hurt in the incident, adding that he sustained gashes to both hands and his knee.

“Further investigations at the scene found that the suspect was driving under the influence of drugs, We have detained him,” said ACP Jasmin.

He added that the man will be investigated under Section 44 (1)(a) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for driving under the influence of drugs and Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for drug abuse.
