QuickCheck: Were cables stolen in Penang, as seen in a viral video?


WHEN it comes to the list of stolen items, cables are a regular target for those looking for a quick payday.

As such, news of cable thefts is not unheard of, and such incidents can go viral, especially when the pilfering happens in a public space.

Recently, a video of an attempt to steal cables went viral on social media, along with the claim that it happened in Penang.

Is this true?

TRUE

Acting North Seberang Perai Deputy OCPD Supt T. Chandram confirmed the incident in a statement posted on Facebook.

He said the cables belonged to Telekom Malaysia (TM), and the incident occurred near Tasek Gelugor.

He added that the police are tracking down the person who recorded the video as a witness to the crime.

The video of the theft went viral on social media on Aug 12.

"This case is being investigated under Section 379/511 of the Penal Code for attempted theft," said the statement.

It added that TM also confirmed the incident.

"The police urge anyone with information on this case to contact the investigating officer, Insp Muhamad Ikram Zulkifli, at 04-576 2222 (ext: 2275) or visit the nearest police station to assist in the investigation," said Supt Chandram.
