QuickCheck: Did a troop of monkeys lead to a Perak road accident?


MALAYSIA is a nation with lush jungles, and as such people often wind up sharing the roads with all sorts of wildlife.

Recently, a video went viral of a car crash in Perak; it is claimed that the crash happened because those driving the car were trying to avoid a troop of monkeys while travelling near Kerian.

Is this true?

A total of six people were injured when the car they were in lost control and fell into a drain after trying to avoid a troop of monkeys in Kerian.

Kerian OCPD Supt Juna Yusoff said two women and four children aged between one and 13 were injured in the accident that took place at KM15 of Jalan Selama-Bagan Serai on Saturday (Aug 24) at about 3.45pm.

"The driver was headed towards Bagan Serai and had tried to avoid a troop of monkeys, causing the car to swerve to the right side of the road. It hit an electric post before falling into a drain," he said in a statement on Monday (Aug 26).

"The driver, her sister-in-law and four children fell out of the car during the incident.They were rescued by passers-by," he said, adding that a 35-second video clip of the incident was found on Facebook.

Supt Juna said the victims were sent to the Parit Buntar Hospital where they received outpatient treatment.

"On Sunday (Aug 25) at about 11.30am, the driver came to the Kerian police station to lodge a report on the incident. The matter is being investigated under Rule 10 of the Road Traffic Rules," he added.

Supt Juna said motorists are advised to always be careful while driving, especially during the rainy season.

"A lot of roads in Kerian have irrigation and drains on both sides of the road. Any accident-related information can be forwarded to the state traffic police at 05-245 1222 or the district police operations centre at 05-721 2222," he added.
