QuickCheck: Was a crocodile spotted at a lake in Shah Alam?

CROCODILE sightings in more urban areas may be more common nearer coastal towns and cities, with reports of sightings coming from states as varied as Melaka, Sarawak and Sabah.

Recently, however, posts have gone viral on social media claiming that a crocodile was spotted at a lake in Section 7, Shah Alam.

Is it true that a crocodile was spotted roaming in a lake in Shah Alam?

VERDICT:

TRUE

Selangor Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) director Wan Mohd Adib Wan Mohd Yusoh said that the presence of a crocodile in the lake is in fact confirmed through an image captured by a drone.

When contacted by Sinar Harian on Tuesday (Sept 3), he said that the crocodile submerged into the lake shortly after the photo was taken.

Meanwhile, the Shah Alam City Council said it was aware of the viral posts and that the Environmental Health Department, in collaboration with the Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan), was actively monitoring the situation.

“As a safety measure, MBSA has installed barrier ropes around the lake in Section 7, Shah Alam, and will conduct periodic monitoring.

“Additionally, Perhilitan will place warning banners around the lake and set traps to capture the crocodile,” MBSA said in its statement on Tuesday.

The local authority advised visitors to exercise caution and, if necessary, avoid recreational activities around the lake in Section 7, Shah Alam.

This is, however, not the first time that there have been sightings of a crocodile in Shah Alam.

In 2019, it was reported that a baby saltwater crocodile, believed to have been released by irresponsible individuals, had been captured at the Shah Alam Lake in Section 14.
