QuickCheck: Are some eateries buying diseased poultry to save costs?

MANY people have had to tighten their belts to find ways to deal with the rising cost of living.

However, some methods used to cut costs appear very extreme, to put it mildly.

Recently, there were claims that a government agency issued an official statement warning consumers that some eateries buy diseased chickens at low prices or obtain dead poultry for free.

Is there any truth to these claims?

VERDICT:

FALSE

Bernama reported that the Fisheries Department has denied that its director-general Datuk Adnan Hussain had issued such a statement.

It said the fake message claiming that the Fisheries Department issued the statement is being circulated on WhatsApp or other social media platforms.

"Issues concerning food safety are of great importance and should only be referred to authentic and authoritative sources," read a statement issued by the department's corporate communications unit on Friday (Oct 11).

It added that all parties involved in the food industry must adhere to the food safety guidelines and regulations set by authorities.

A one-minute video also went viral recently, showing a customer at a restaurant making a complaint after finding maggots in his meal and confronting the eatery's staff about it.
