IN AN era where hazing and bullying in institutions are under scrutiny, a shocking incident at Universiti Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia’s (UPNM) military training academy has come to light.
Allegations have surfaced that a cadet officer endured severe bullying, including being "ironed" by a senior, raising concerns about the safety and culture within such institutions.
Did this appalling act really occur, causing harm and outrage?
Verdict:
TRUE
The Armed Forces have launched an investigation into claims that a cadet officer at the military training academy in UPNM, Sungai Besi, was bullied and abused by senior students.
General Tan Sri Mohammad Ab Rahman, Commander of the Armed Forces, confirmed that a detailed investigation is underway.
He stated, "The investigation is ongoing, and we are letting the process take its course.
"The Armed Forces takes such issues seriously and will not protect any parties involved in this case."
On Wednesday (Oct 30), the Armed Forces issued a statement acknowledging the incident, where it is alleged that a cadet was bullied by seniors using an iron on his chest, leaving burn marks, as reported on social media.
The statement also indicated that severe disciplinary or legal action will be taken against those found guilty.
Concurrently, the Armed Forces urges the public to allow a thorough investigation to ensure justice for the victim.
The public is requested to refrain from speculating on the case, as this could hinder the investigation process.
This incident recalls the tragic 2017 death of UPNM naval cadet officer Zulfarhan Osman Zulkarnain, who suffered fatal injuries after being repeatedly ironed over most of his body.
As a result, six former UPNM students were sentenced to death by the Court of Appeal on July 23 after being found guilty of the offence.
