QuickCheck: Is the LHDN chief texting people to ask for help?

SCAMMERS tend to impersonate persons of authority, which makes victims more susceptible to being duped.

Recently, a WhatsApp user received a message from someone claiming to be the Inland Revenue Board (LHDN) chief executive officer, seeking aid to complete a "task."

The caller also uses the LHDN logo and claims to be "Datuk Dr Abu" – but is he really reaching out for "help"?

Verdict:

FALSE

In a Facebook post, the LHDN warned Malaysians not to fall for this trick.

The LHDN has never sent out text messages under the name of the chief executive officer via WhatsApp," it said.

In another statement, LHDN said it would not hesitate to take action against those involved, under applicable legal provisions.

"LHDN urges the public to be cautious of any message from WhatsApp, email or other suspicious links, and to report such messages and block the phone number used.
