QuickCheck: Did a Malaysian father stop smoking so he could donate his kidney to his son?

NICOTINE is a highly addictive substance found in tobacco-based products like cigarettes. It makes quitting the bad habit extremely difficult.

However, a series of social media posts claims that a father's love for his son is much more potent.

It says that a father had quit smoking so that he could donate one of his kidneys to his son.

Is the post real? Did it really happen?

Verdict:

TRUE

After four years of struggling as a kidney patient and receiving dialysis treatment, Dr Mohamad Zulkifli Ayub, 27, expressed gratitude when he no longer had to do so, reported Sinar Harian.

According to him, his father, Ayub Abdul Ghani, 61, decided to donate a kidney to him after seeing him coming home exhausted after a day’s work and at the same time having to go through dialysis.

"He felt sorry for me and finally decided to donate his kidney," said Dr Mohamad Zulkifli.

"My father gradually stopped smoking even though he is a heavy smoker because a smoker cannot be an organ donor," he added.

Dr Mohamad Zulkifli also shared his and his father’s journey on TikTok. One post showed Ayun using an incentive spirometer, a handheld medical device used to help patients improve the functioning of their lungs, with the caption "My Hero".

It was reported that the 8-hour transplant procedure was successfully carried out on Tuesday (Nov 19).
