QuickCheck: Does CyberSecurity Malaysia contact the public through phone calls?

RECENTLY, there has been an uptick in cases where Malaysian phone users receive calls from those claiming to be from official entities.

Is it true that CyberSecurity Malaysia, which is the national cybersecurity specialist agency under the purview of the Digital Ministry, contacts individuals in such a manner?

VERDICT:

FALSE

In posts on its official social platforms and website, the agency said it detected an increase in criminal scam calls claiming to be from CyberSecurity Malaysia through Cyber999.

These fraudulent calls also claim to be from the Communications Ministry and official regulatory bodies like the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission, through Cyber999.

CyberSecurity Malaysia asserted that it has not made any phone calls to individuals recently, and has not been involved in any such calls in the past.

"If you receive a call claiming to be from us, please be advised that it is not from our officers.

"We urge you to be cautious and not share any personal information over the phone, especially if the call seems suspicious.

"We will never request personal or financial information via phone.

"If you have any questions, please contact us through our official channels at enquiry@cybersecurity.my," it said.
