As videos of the daring heist spread online, many are left wondering: did this peculiar incident really happen?

Two men in motorcycle helmets made off with cash after robbing a sundry shop using a slingshot in Sabah's northern Kota Belud district.

The incident was caught on the shop's closed-circuit television camera (CCTV), with the 59-second video circulating on social media since Monday morning (Dec 16).

In the video, the suspect armed with the slingshot is seen using the weapon to shoot through an opening of a small room within the shop where the cash drawer was located.

A man believed to be a staff member was inside the room.

The suspects then managed to break open the door, with one assaulting the staff while the other rushed inside to retrieve the money.

Police have since arrested a 34-year-old man in connection with the robbery.

Kota Belud police chief Supt Shahrudin Mat Husain said the man was apprehended from his home at Kampung Kuala Abai at 4.47pm on Monday (Dec 16).

He said police detected the video online showing two men in motorcycle helmets, one armed with a slingshot, breaking into the shop.

Based on their investigation, the robbery occurred at an outlet in Kota Belud town at 4am on Dec 11.

The two men managed to make off with the money after the altercation with the staff member.

"However, no serious injuries were reported on the victim," said Supt Shahrudin.

Acting on a tip-off, he said, they arrested the local suspect to assist in the investigation, which is framed under Section 395/397 of the Penal Code for gang and armed robbery.

He urged witnesses to come forward to the district station as police search for the second suspect.
