QuickCheck: Is a medical expert being impersonated to sell health products?

WHEN it comes to health and health products, the endorsement of an expert can significantly influence consumer trust, especially if these experts are seen to endorse the products.

It is logical that some parties might falsely claim their products are endorsed by experts, even when they are not. Recently, it was claimed that TikTok videos promoting products were actually AI-generated impersonations of a medical expert. Is this true?

VERDICT:

TRUE

Yes, this is true. Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) Director Comm Datuk Seri Ramli Mohamed Yoosuf stated that the account "Malaysia Shopping Mall" had videos using the voice and image of medical expert Prof Datuk Dr Nordin Darus.

"The use of his video and voice was done without his permission. We believe it was produced using AI technology," he said on Monday (December 23).

Comm Ramli reminded the public to be cautious and not to easily trust advertisements on social media.

"The advancement of AI technology has led to advertisements that show the voices and faces of famous individuals without their permission. It is meant to confuse buyers," he said.

He also advised the public to be wary of health product promotions, especially when the source is questionable.

"It is feared that the products being sold are fake and could have detrimental effects on the users," he added.
