Sailing the seven seas is perilous, especially during the monsoon season when the winds and the rain can be unpredictable and treacherous.
Recently, a video of what looks like villagers trying to free a wooden sailing ship that had run aground on a beach made its rounds on social media.
It was said that the beach is located in Sarawak, and the ship was Russian.
Did it really happen?
Verdict:
TRUE
According to Dalat police chief deputy superintendent Saga Chunggat, who spoke with Astro Awani, four Russian sailors were found unharmed along the Kuala Oya, near Mukah beaches.
The ship they were on was passing along Sarawak coastal waters when it was swept by turbulent waves onto a sandbank at Kuala Oya in central Sarawak last Friday (Dec 20).
"The Russians were sailing along the coastal seas when their yacht called Pilgrim was hit by huge waves.
"The vessel was swept onto sandbanks and got stuck,” said Saga, adding that the quartet also had legal documents such as passports.
He added that their navigation system was also not working while facing the waves.
The sailors were travelling from the Philippines, made a stopover in Labuan, and were scheduled to make their way to Kuching.
