QuickCheck: Were imitation firearms on sale in Sabah?

Law enforcement often uncovers surprises that catch the public off guard.

Recently, it was claimed that police in Sabah made a startling discovery during a raid in Kolombong, where imitation firearms were reportedly on sale.

Could it be true that such items were being sold, leading to arrests and confiscations?

VERDICT:

TRUE

Police raided premises in Kolombong where imitation firearms were on sale and confiscated various types of these fake weapons.

The raid at 2pm was conducted by the D9 Criminal Investigation Department (Special Investigation) of the Sabah Police Contingent Headquarters (IPK) Criminal Investigation Department (JSJ).

Two individuals, including the 'tauke' of the premises, were arrested.

On the raid, Sabah JSJ chief Senior Asst Comm Datuk Azmi Abd Rahim said the raiding team, acting on information, found the premises selling various types of imitation firearms.

Among the fake firearms seized were four replicas of Glock semi-automatic pistols and one replica of a Beretta pistol.

The raiding team also seized 10 bottles containing plastic bullets, four packets containing plastic bullets, and one target unit.

Following the seizure, an 18-year-old woman working as a caretaker of the premises was arrested.

Subsequent interrogation led to the arrest of the employer on the same day.

The 32-year-old suspect admitted to being the owner of the imitation weapons but claimed ignorance of the law regarding possession of fake firearms.

SAC Azmi reminded the public that buying, selling, and possessing imitation firearms is illegal.

Possessing imitation firearms is a legal offence regardless of the reason, he added.

SAC Azmi then said that the police would not compromise on any act of possessing, buying, and selling imitation firearms, with those involved facing legal action.
