QuickCheck: Is a parking compound slip with a QR code part of a scam, as claimed in a viral message?

A MESSAGE has been circulating widely on WhatsApp since last week with a photo of a slip of paper reminding the recipient to pay a parking compound.

There is also a QR code printed on the slip.

The message warns recipients not to scan the QR code as it is a scam, claiming that a friend's employee scanned it, and lost all their money.

Is this true?

VERDICT:

FALSE

In a statement issued last week, the Johor Baru City Council (MBJB) said this claim is misinformation being circulated on social media and messaging platforms.

According to MBJB, the slip of paper in question is genuine and provides details of outstanding compounds that have not been settled.

“The QR code displayed on the document links directly to the MBJBSpot app, designed to facilitate online payment,” it said in the Facebook statement.

MBJB also advised the public not to disseminate unverified information.
