JOHANNESBURG, Sept. 12 (Xinhua) -- South African President Cyril Ramaphosa on Monday visited the site of a mine dam collapse that occurred Sunday and assessed the extent of infrastructure damage in the Jagersfontein-Charlesville area in the Free State.
"There are a lot of people who have lost their homes in this tragedy and we are going to address that," the president, accompanied by several ministers, told the crowd gathered.
Ramaphosa assured displaced residents of Jagersfontein that the government would rebuild their houses. He also visited those injured who are being treated in hospital, vowing that the root cause of the incident would be probed.
It is expected that the National Treasury would soon be releasing funds to deal with the disaster after the national government declared it a national disaster.
A mine dam collapsed in the middle part of South Africa Sunday morning, as flooding due to the incident destroyed homes and infrastructure, with three people killed and over 40 others injured, according to the department of cooperative governance and traditional affairs. The government has also warned of the negative impact on the environment following the incident.
