CAIRO, Dec. 12 (Xinhua) -- Six people were killed and two others injured on Monday in a road accident in Upper Egypt's province of Minya, state-run Ahram Online news website reported.

The deadly crash occurred when a pickup truck collided with a microbus on Cairo-Aswan agricultural highway in the south of the province, according to Ahram Online.

The victims' bodies were transferred to a nearby hospital, Ahram said, adding that two bodies were not identified.

The general prosecutor has started an investigation into the accident to find its cause.

In Egypt, traffic accidents are common and claim thousands of lives every year. Most of the accidents are caused by speeding, poor maintenance of roads, and lax enforcement of traffic laws.

Over the past few years, Egypt has been upgrading its road network by building new roads and bridges as well as repairing existing ones to reduce the number of traffic accidents.
