KAMPALA, July 8 (Xinhua) -- Four people died on the spot while two others were seriously injured in a road accident in the northern Ugandan district of Nwoya on Saturday morning.
According to the police, the cause of the accident was overspeeding, and the vehicle involved was heading for a traditional wedding ceremony.
"Upon reaching Ayago in Murchison Falls National Park, the driver lost control and overturned the vehicle, killing four of its occupants and injuring two," the police said in a statement.
"Bodies of the deceased were conveyed to Anaka mortuary while victims were rushed and admitted to a nearby general hospital," the police added.
Robert Abak, the resident district commissioner of Nebbi who was supposed to host the wedding guests, told Xinhua by telephone that the dead were clan members.
"It is unfortunate that the dead included a former legislator. The driver might have dozed off, losing control of the vehicle, Abak said.
Uganda registers some 20,000 road accidents nationwide each year, causing more than 2,000 deaths, according to police data.
