Man killed by hyena while trying to save wife in southern Tanzania

DAR ES SALAAM, July 12 (Xinhua) -- A man was killed by a hyena Tuesday as he attempted to save his wife who was attacked by the wild animal in Masasi district in the Mtwara region in southern Tanzania, an official said Wednesday.

The man, 62, was killed by the hyena at around 7:30 p.m., local time, in Chiwambo village of Lulindi ward in Masasi district, said Maimuna Mbaya, Chiwambo village chairperson.

Mbaya said the hyena raided the house belonging to the couple and attacked the 49-year-old wife of the victim.

"When the old man saw his wife being attacked he assaulted the hyena before it turned on him, killing him instantly," she said, adding that the wife screamed to alert fellow villagers who killed the hyena using traditional weapons, including arrows.
