NAIROBI, Sept. 1 (Xinhua) -- Kenyan President William Ruto on Friday called on Africa's youth to take charge of the continent's climate action, noting that they have the necessary energy and skills.

Ruto, who spoke in the Kenyan capital of Nairobi at the African Youth Climate Assembly, a precursor to the inaugural Africa Climate Summit slated for Sept. 4-6, said the youth have to adopt climate-smart solutions as they drive the continent's agenda.

"They should create a great sustainable future, one that will safeguard our natural carbon sinks and transition our consumption to be greener and decarbonized," Ruto said at the assembly themed "African-led Solutions to Global Challenges."

The assembly served as a rallying point for the youth and drew attention to the unique climate-related vulnerabilities faced by African countries. It further highlighted the region's substantial contributions to global climate solutions, especially those offered by the youth.

"African youth must be solution-oriented. Being here and holding this event, you fought your way and continue demanding the opportunity that you deserve," said the president as he opened the forum.

He promised to champion the resolutions and declaration of the youth assembly ahead of the main climate summit.

More than 20 heads of state and government from the continent, climate experts from Africa and across the globe, and thousands of delegates are expected to attend the summit.
