1 killed, 11 injured in accidental rocket explosion in eastern DR Congo


GOMA, DR Congo, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) -- One person was killed and 11 others were injured Thursday in an accidental rocket explosion in the North Kivu province in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, an army spokesperson said.

The explosion occurred at around 4 p.m. local time (1400 GMT) when an RPG 7 rocket held by a soldier aboard a military vehicle was unintentionally triggered following a road incident in the city of Goma, the capital of the North Kivu province, said Guillaume Kaiko Ndjike, the military spokesperson in the province.

The rocket landed in the Unity stadium in the city, injuring 11 civilians, Ndjike said, adding that the soldier died of his wounds.
