YAOUNDE, Oct. 2 (Xinhua) -- The UN World Food Program (WFP) has signed an agreement with the Cameroonian government to provide humanitarian support within two years to more than 260,000 vulnerable people, including school children in the country, said Wanja Kaaria, WFP's country director in Cameroon, Monday.

The new funding, worth 45 million U.S. dollars to be provided by the World Bank, will respond to the food security situation in the Adamawa, North, Far North, East, Northwest and Southwest regions of the country that are affected by numerous crises, Kaaria told reporters in Yaounde, the capital of Cameroon.

"(Cameroonian) communities have repeatedly suffered from increased food security, a lot of it because of several crises. This has made the population vulnerable to food insecurity but also the impact of climate change," Kaaria said. "These resources will allow the World Food Program to implement activities to support communities ... to meet immediate food needs, (and they) will also allow them to build resilience to shocks and sustainable development of livelihood."

The UN said in May that some 407.3 million U.S. dollars are needed in funding to help about 2.7 million people suffering from the effects of violence, national disaster, climate shocks, and disease outbreaks in the Central African nation.
