At least 5 killed in road accident in E. Kenya


MAKUENI, Kenya, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- At least five people were killed on Tuesday night while several others sustained injuries in an accident involving a commuter bus, a tractor and a truck along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway, according to the police.

Peter Maina, Kibwezi divisional police commander, said on Wednesday that the bus, which was traveling from the national capital of Nairobi to the coastal city of Mombasa, first rammed into a tractor ahead of it before causing more damage in the Kambu area in Makueni County.

"The bus was traveling when it hit a tractor and veered, colliding with an oncoming truck. Many others were injured and are in hospital," Maina said on the phone, adding that the police are investigating the incident.

It is the latest accident on the busy highway, which has claimed dozens of lives in recent months amid calls to tackle the menace.

An estimated 3,000 Kenyans die in road accidents annually despite concerted efforts by the state and the private sector to promote safety on the highways, according to the country's National Transport and Safety Authority.
