39th Malta Book Festival gets underway


VALLETTA, Oct. 19 (Xinhua) -- The 39th Malta Book Festival kicked off this week, uniting book enthusiasts and industry professionals in a five-day celebration of literature.

The annual event opened its doors on Wednesday, and will run through Sunday at the Malta Fairs & Conventions Center in Ta' Qali in central Malta.

Attracting some 50,000 visitors every year, the book festival is a significant event on Malta's cultural calendar which offers extensive networking opportunities.

This year's event, with over 50 exhibitors and themed "beyondbooks," explores the medium's capacity to transcend the written word, in forms ranging from illustration to audio, from theater to film adaptation.

The festival's program encompasses around 100 activities, catering to various audiences.

Originally known as the Malta Book Fair when it was launched in 1979, it became the Malta Book Festival in 2012, evolving into a multi-faceted celebration of book culture.
