DHAKA, Jan. 22 (Xinhua) -- The Bangladeshi capital Dhaka recorded the lowest temperature of the season on Monday as mercury dipped to a chilling 12.3 Celsius degrees.

A light to moderate cold is currently sweeping through parts of Bangladesh, which has tropical monsoon-type climate, with a hot and rainy summer and a dry winter.

Meteorologist Omar Faruk told media that temperature in Dhaka was recorded at 12.3 degrees on Monday morning, 2.1 less as compared to the day before.

According to the official, this marked the lowest temperature of the winter season in the city.

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department forecast a potential further drop of one to two degrees in Dhaka's nighttime temperature.

It said that mercury plunged to its lowest 8.1 degrees in Naogaon district in northern Bangladesh on Monday.

Due to dense fog, sunlight in northern Bangladesh districts was completely absent while cars and buses were running by switching on headlights in day time.

The severe cold brought normal life and businesses to almost standstill in parts of Bangladesh, specially in the northern region facing the Himalayan mountains.
