Tanzanian VP urges African governments to tackle employment challenges

DAR ES SALAAM, Feb. 7 (Xinhua) -- Tanzanian Vice President Philip Mpango on Wednesday urged African governments to tackle challenges related to job creation, saying it required inclusive, transformative, and integrated approaches.

Opening the 7th African Social Partners Service Summit in the port city of Dar es Salaam, Mpango noted that employment creation and strategies that promote inclusive growth and development have become key priorities of all African governments.

The African Social Partners Service Summits have provided insights and guidelines to foster employment opportunities across Africa, he said.

Mpango said Africa's employment challenges have been exacerbated by the global climate crisis, the devastating impacts of raging conflicts in the region, spillover effects of geopolitical tensions in several parts of the world, as well as debilitating effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

"There is an urgent need to foster collaboration among all stakeholders. We need to develop a platform for action that transcends sectoral boundaries, and unites government agencies, domestic partners, and external allies, including the private sector," he said.

Mpango said Africa's labor market is characterized by the existence of a large informal sector, the predominance of the agriculture sector in the economy, low production and productivity as well as stubborn youth unemployment.
