ABUJA, March 18 (Xinhua) -- A suspected suicide bomber detonated an improvised explosive device (IED), killing himself and injuring two others, late Sunday in Nigeria's northern state of Borno, the police said Monday.

The suspected bomber was heading to a crowded mosque in the Biu local government area during evening prayer when the IED went off a few meters away from his intended target, injuring two passers-by, Daso Nahum, the state police spokesman, told reporters in Maiduguri, the state capital.

The injured were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment, Nahum said, adding that a combined team of security personnel was immediately deployed to restore normalcy.

An investigation has been launched into the bombing, the spokesman said.
