LUSAKA, June 18 (Xinhua) -- Zambia's immigration authorities have arrested 297 illegal immigrants during cleanup operations conducted in different parts of the country, a spokesperson said on Tuesday.
Namati Nshinka, spokesperson for the Department of Immigration, said in a statement that the illegal immigrants were arrested between June 10 and 17 for various immigration offenses.
The spokesperson noted that during operations conducted in the Zambian capital of Lusaka, a total of 45 illegal immigrants were arrested after they all failed to provide documentation proving their legal status.
He added that among those arrested are 41 Burundians, two Egyptians, and two Rwandans.
"The operation is part of ongoing enforcement measures aimed at ridding the city of illegal immigrants," Nshinka said.
He also said the department removed 157 illegal immigrants from the country during the same period.
