11 killed in central Uganda road accident

KAMPALA, June 19 (Xinhua) -- At least 11 people were killed and dozens more injured in a road accident on Wednesday in Uganda's central district of Kassanda, a police spokesperson said.

The accident involving a truck carrying market vendors occurred at Namilyango village on the Mityana-Bukaya road at about 1:30 p.m. local time, Racheal Kawala, a regional police spokesperson, said in a statement.

"The driver, who has not been identified, lost control of the vehicle on a slope, causing it to overturn, resulting in the death of 11 people on the spot," Kawala said. "Others sustained serious injuries and were rushed to hospitals for treatment."

She added that the territorial traffic police in Kassanda have launched an investigation into the cause of the fatal accident.

According to police statistics, there are approximately 20,000 road accidents in Uganda each year, resulting in more than 2,000 deaths.
