PARIS, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) -- Canada's Camryn Rogers announced a changing of the guard by claiming gold in the women's hammer throw at the Paris Olympics on Tuesday.
The 25-year-old clinched the title with a best throw of 76.97 meters, to finish ahead of American Annette Echikunwoke, who took silver with 75.48.
China's Zhao Jie took bronze with 74.27 while defending champion Anita Wlodarczyk finished fourth.
"To be on that podium and to hear the national anthem, it's something that I feel like I've dreamed of for so long," Rogers said. "I started throwing 12-and-a-half years ago. That summer was the London Olympics. Watching our Canadian women out there, doing their absolute best and representing our country so well. I knew I wanted to be here one day."
Rogers' victory ended Wlodarczyk's dominance in this event that had dated back to London 2012. The Pole was aiming to become only the third athlete in history to win the same individual athletics event at four consecutive Games.
Americans Al Oerter (discus) and Carl Lewis (long jump) remain the only individuals to achieve the feat.
