Olympics | Home favorite Clouvel leads after fencing round of modern pentathlon

PARIS, Aug. 8 (Xinhua) -- France's Elodie Clouvel took the lead in the women's modern pentathlon individual competitions at the Paris Olympics after the fencing round on Thursday.

Clouvel led the pack with a score of 260 points, achieving 27 victories and eight defeats. Hungary's Michelle Gulyas secured second place with 245 points, while reigning Olympic champion Kate French of Britain finished third with 240 points.

China's Zhang Mingyu, a three-time Asian Games champion, earned 225 points, placing seventh among the 36 female competitors.

For the men's competition, Ukraine's Oleksandr Tovkai and Egypt's Ahmed Elgendy topped the leaderboard, each with 24 wins and 11 defeats. Latvia's Pavels Svecovs followed closely in third place, recording 23 wins and 12 defeats for a total of 240 points.

Chinese athletes Li Shuhuan and Luo Shuai scored 220 and 210 points, ranking 16th and 20th, respectively.

The modern pentathlon is made up of four events combining five sports, namely riding, fencing, swimming, running and shooting.

On Friday, the men's individual semifinal will take place at the Chateau de Versailles venue, featuring four events: riding show jumping, the fencing bonus round, the 200-meter freestyle swim, and the laser run.
