PARIS, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- Unbeaten Spain edged Australia 11-9 to win the women's water polo gold medal at the Paris Olympics here on Saturday.

Spain, two-time runners-up at London 2012 and Tokyo 2020, enjoyed a 7-5 advantage at the final break and later took a four-goal lead before the last two minutes, and thanks to their goalkeeper Martina Terre with 15 saves and Bea Ortiz's four goals, managed to win 2-2, 1-0, 4-3, 4-4.

Alice Williams of Australia scored five goals in the final and was named the most valuable player in Paris with a total of 21 goals.

In the bronze medal match, the Netherlands ended the United States' record of six Olympic medals by defeating the triple champions 11-10 with a last-gasp goal after having been 9-5 behind in the third period.

Netherlands' captain Sabrina van der Sloot scored six goals to set her team up for their second water polo medal, after having won gold at Beijing 2008.

Serbia and Croatia will clash in the men's final while the United States will meet Hungary in the bronze medal match on the last day of the Paris Olympics.
