WINDHOEK, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) -- Namibia on Monday launched "The Digital School" (TDS) pilot project, an initiative supported by the United Arab Emirates' Digital School and the World Food Program (WFP). This project aims to transform education across the country, with every school in the region set to benefit.

"This project, which also extends its benefits to our neighboring nations of Angola, Zambia, Lesotho, Madagascar, and South Africa, represents a beacon of hope and progress in our shared pursuit of educational excellence," Namibian Minister of Education, Arts and Culture Ester Nghipondoka said in a statement at the launch in Okahandja, 70 km north of the country's capital of Windhoek.

According to Nghipondoka, the project focuses on integrating digital tools and methods into the learning environment and seeks to build a model for digital transformation in schools, equipping students with essential digital skills, enhancing teachers' abilities through targeted training, and developing a national strategy to advance digital education across the country.

Sixteen schools will benefit from the project, with one school per region designated as the digital pilot school. Khomas and Hardap Regions will each have two pilot schools. TDS and WFP will collaborate closely with the education ministry and other stakeholders throughout the project's duration.

Nghipondoka emphasized that digital transformation is a central goal of the 2022 National Conference on Education Implementation Plan (2023-2030), with plans to equip schools with ICT devices.

"The ministry plans to roll out smart televisions to schools, also targeting primary schools. This commitment underscores our dedication to evolving with the times and equipping our learners and teachers with the best tools for success," she said.
