JERUSALEM, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) -- Israeli researchers have utilized artificial intelligence (AI) to identify and forecast high-risk pulmonary embolism (PE) among patients only using data available upon emergency room arrival, Sheba Medical Center said on Tuesday.

PE, a dangerous blood clot that obstructs blood flow to the lungs, usually originates in the deep veins of the leg and can be life-threatening if not detected early.

In a study published in the Journal of Medical Internet Research, a team from Sheba and Ben Gurion University applied advanced machine learning techniques to create an algorithm that analyzes existing medical records to assess the risk of PE before hospitalization.

The algorithm was tested in a clinical study involving over 46,000 ER patients, of whom 1,942, or about 4 percent, were diagnosed with PE.

The study showed that the algorithm could accurately identify and predict patients at high risk of PE, demonstrating the potential of AI in early diagnosis and improving patient outcomes.

It plans to incorporate this AI tool into its ER diagnostic systems, enhancing the hospital's ability to save lives, the medical center said.
