ABUJA, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) -- A total of 16 people were killed, and 17 others sustained varying degrees of injuries following a road crash involving multiple vehicles in Nigeria's southern state of Oyo on Tuesday morning, traffic police said.

At least four vehicles crashed after the brakes of a truck failed along the Ojoo-Iwo Road in Ibadan, the capital of the state, Mayowa Odewo, a spokesperson for the Federal Road Safety Corps in Oyo, told the media.

Odewo attributed "brake failure, reckless driving, and lack of proper maintenance of vehicles" as the cause of the incident, citing a preliminary investigation.

He said the injured victims were rushed to a nearby hospital while the bodies of the deceased were deposited in a morgue.

Deadly road accidents are frequently reported in Nigeria, often caused by overloading, bad road conditions, and reckless driving.
