Bodies of 6 missing people recovered following Tanzania boat accident: official

DAR ES SALAAM, Sept. 18 (Xinhua) -- The bodies of six missing people have been found after a boat capsized in Lake Victoria in Bunda District of northern Tanzania, bringing the death toll to seven, authorities said on Wednesday.

The accident happened on Sunday evening. The boat capsized as the victims were returning to their homes after a wedding ceremony in Mwiruruma village on the shores of the lake. A total of 9 people were rescued.

Bunda District Commissioner Vincent Naano said the sixth body was recovered on Wednesday morning, and all the bodies have been identified and collected by relatives.

Naano said he had instructed the Tanzania Shipping Agencies Corporation to inspect all boats in Lake Victoria to avoid further accidents.

Shared by Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda, Lake Victoria is Africa's largest lake by area and the world's second-largest freshwater lake by surface area after Lake Superior in North America.
