VIENTIANE, Sept. 19 (Xinhua) -- Representatives from member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and Mekong River Commission (MRC) member countries gathered here for the second ASEAN-MRC Water Security Dialogue, pledging to address water security challenges across Mekong and ASEAN regions.

The dialogue, held on Wednesday, agreed on a mechanism for fostering regional cooperation, enhancing resilience and advancing sustainable development in ASEAN and the Mekong region, according to Laos' Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment on Thursday.

The dialogue recognized numerous pressing challenges facing ASEAN and the Mekong region, including climate change, disaster-related events such as floods, droughts and landslides, human-induced changes, water scarcity, and food security concerns.

In his speech, Lao Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Bounkham Vorachit said that the dialogue provided a platform for policymakers and stakeholders to exchange innovative ideas, identify areas of cooperation on sustainability, and reaffirm commitment to tackle water security challenges.

The dialogue emphasized the need for increased investment in water infrastructure, climate adaptation, sustainable management and conservation of natural resources.

The dialogue also stressed that regional cooperation, mutual understanding, shared investments and joint projects will drive progress toward water security and sustainable development for all.
