PETALING JAYA: Malaysian-born actor and comedian Ronny Chieng has poked fun at ex-Fox News talk show host Tucker Carlson, who mistakenly identified US presidential candidate Kamala Harris as Malaysian at a Donald Trump rally at Madison Square Garden in New York.
“Big mistake buddy. I’m Malaysian and The Rock is Samoan.
“That’s right. Now, you’re insulting two of the biggest movie stars on the planet,” said Chieng in a video posted to popular satirical news programme The Daily Show’s social media accounts on Wednesday (Oct 30).
In the programme, Chieng also brought up Tony Hinchcliff's racist remarks about Puerto Rico at the same rally.
Johor-born Chieng is currently based in the United States and has starred in movies like Crazy Rich Asians and Shang Chi and The Legend Of The Ten Rings.
On Oct 28, Carlson caused controversy at Donald Trump’s Madison Square Garden rally by making disparaging remarks about Democrat Kamala Harris, misidentifying her heritage as "Samoan-Malaysian".
As reported by The Daily Beast, Carlson aimed his comments at undermining Harris’ credibility as a Democratic nominee in the lead-up to this week’s pivotal US presidential election.
Carlson stated, "It's gonna be pretty hard for Democrats to look at us and say, ‘You know what? Kamala Harris, she got 85 million votes because she’s just so impressive. As the first Samoan-Malaysian low-IQ former California prosecutor ever to be elected president'."
Harris was born to an Indian mother and a Black Jamaican father, both immigrants to the United States.
Her White House biography says she is “the first woman, the first Black American, and the first South Asian American” to be elected as the US Vice-President.
Former US president Donald Trump had also previously falsely asserted that Harris has not identified as both Black and Indian during an interview at the National Association of Black Journalists conference in Chicago.
