BiH, Croatia join hands to combat plastic pollution

SARAJEVO, Dec. 18 (Xinhua) -- A cross-border meeting was held in Capljina, Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) on Wednesday, aimed at reducing plastic waste in the Adriatic-Ionian region.

Representatives from the Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries in Split, Croatia, outlined the project's goals and activities, and the Neretva river basin was selected for pilot activities, according to a news release.

Key actions include harmonizing monitoring protocols, mapping waste generation areas, and studying microplastics in the river and its estuary.

Ecological clean-up campaigns and public awareness initiatives will also be organized, involving local environmental groups and diving clubs.

The meeting is part of a 36-month project with a budget of over 1.71 million euros (1.77 million U.S. dollars) that focuses on mitigating plastic pollution from rivers to coastal areas.

The project highlights connection between land, rivers, and the sea concerning plastic pollution in the region. (1 euro = 1.04 U.S. dollar)
