OTTAWA, Jan. 10 (Xinhua) -- Canada's employment rose by 91,000, or 0.4 percent, in December and the employment rate increased 0.2 percentage points to 60.8 percent, Statistics Canada said Friday.

According to the national statistical agency, the year 2024 ended with 413,000, or 2 percent, more people working in December compared with 12 months earlier.

This year-over-year growth rate was comparable to the one observed in December 2023 and to the average growth rate for December over the pre-COVID-19 pandemic period of 2017 to 2019, the agency said.

The employment rate, the proportion of the population aged 15 and older who are employed, increased after holding steady in November. The increase in December was the first since January 2023. On a year-over-year basis, the employment rate was down 0.9 percentage points in December, said Statistics Canada.
