WARSAW, Jan. 15 (Xinhua) -- Poland's consumer price index (CPI) recorded a 3.6 percent increase in 2024, down from the 11.4 percent surge seen in the previous year, according to the Central Statistical Office (GUS) on Wednesday.
In December, consumer prices rose 4.7 percent year-on-year, reflecting increases in service prices (6.6 percent) and goods prices (4 percent). Month-on-month, prices remained stable compared to November, with services up 0.1 percent and goods showing no change.
Food prices played a notable role in the year's inflation, with categories such as butter (up 8.7 percent), animal fats (7.5 percent), and bread (4.9 percent) contributing significantly.
However, some categories saw deflationary trends, which helped mitigate the overall inflation rate. Prices of sugar fell sharply by 23.9 percent year-on-year, while vegetable fats dropped 7.5 percent and flour decreased by 3.7 percent. Clothing and footwear also saw a 1.5 percent decline in prices, contributing to a reduction in the CPI.
The inflation data highlights the mixed economic conditions in Poland. While consumer spending remained robust in some areas, such as food and services, other sectors like recreation, culture, and alcohol/tobacco saw price decreases, reflecting changing consumer behavior amid economic adjustments.
